Barbara’s Jalapeno Cheese Puffs

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

These are pretty tasty after the first handful.  The initial bites seem a tad too heavy on the garlic/ onion and light on heat and cheese.  After a few bites the flavor smooths out and the taste is nice but…

We never get any real heat.  It is a sad thing thing. But for whimps, it might make them feel ‘strong’!

hmm

Kettle Spicy Thai Chips

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

sad2Usually, I find Kettle produces delicious quality chips.  These chips are one of the exceptions.  The slogan on the front of the bag proclaims “ginger with ATTITUDE“.  Ginger?  Kinda.  Attitude?  Only if that attitude is that of a surly old man who complains everything is too spicy.  The chips are slightly sweet with a bitter aftertaste. The spice lets itself be known as well, by adding to the odd flavor of these chips.  Overall, I was very unhappy with these chips.  Not only did I not like the flavor, but they were terrible enough to toss the entire bag in the trash. The only positive things about these chips?  No trans fats, MSG or artificial flavors.  Avoid at all costs!

Kettle Organic Chipotle Chili Barbeque

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

happyTwo words for these chips:  FREAKING AMAZING! These USDA certified organic chips are by far one of the best chips I have ever tasted.  When I first opened the chips, I was a bit confused.  The inside of the bag is slightly damp with grease and spices.  My first thought was “uh oh… a mistake?”  That could not be any further from the truth.  My initial taste was smoky and sweet, with a hint of spice.  The texture was actually quite crisp with a nice spread of spices and flavorings.  After you eat a few, the heat starts to crank up a notch… but in a pleasant way.  These chips successfully combine smoky, sweet, spicy and peppery on a crisp spud.  A few extra bonuses:  No trans fat, no MSG, and no artificial flavors! A perfect chip?  Darn close.

Cheez-It Hot & Spicy Tabasco

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

sad1I have been a Cheez-It lover for many years.  When I saw this “Hot & Spicy Tabasco” variation, I automatically assumed we had a winner.  Unfortunately, that was not the case.  The initial taste was familiar, but the spice that hits you is rather dull and woody.  Yes… woody.  It tastes like spicy bark of a tree.  I think that says enough.  Stay away at all costs!  Unless you like wood… spicy wood.

Archer Farms Jamaican Jerk- low fat Potato crisps

Monday, December 1st, 2008

These may be some of the worst tasting chips ever! They offer an incredibly bizarre combination of flavors including garlic (lots of that), brown sugar/ molasses, salt, and chili pepper (burnt flavor).

We could find nothing pleasant about the flavor mix or combination here. The best advice we can offer is to give these babies a wide bearth when you are in the store.

Guiltless Chili Lime Baked Chips

Monday, November 17th, 2008

These spicy ships are full of surprising, albeit unevenly spiced, flavor! There is a lot of lime and chili to be found in the bag although the spiciness did not visit every chip equally.  So some chips are simply more piquant than others.  As with most baked chips, the base chip itself is disappointing (to me).  This corn chip, like some many other baked chips, has a cardboard consistency to it.  I guess I just prefer the grease and CRUNCH of a deep fried chip.

In any event if you are looking for a tasty, spicy and almost healthy chip, these are a fine choice.

Kettle Chipotle Chips

Smokey, heat in a crunchy chip. These are excellent chips, really worth finding, eating and enjoying.  There is

Wow

a nice leading flavor of sweetness followed by a lingering warmth.

These chips are as good as you can find if you are looking for a nice combination of sweetness, crunch, smoke and a tad of sweat.

Death Valley Chipotle potato chips. hmmmmmm.

FoodShouldTasteGood – Jalapeño

Friday, October 17th, 2008

This particular chip is a tortilla chip made with diced jalapeño peppers and crushed red peppers.  The initial taste is much like one would expect from a standard tortilla chip.  What sets this brand apart from the others is slight the amount of heat that comes with the aftertaste.  I could taste definitely taste the stone ground white corn and sea salt but only a touch of jalapeño.  They have a very nice crunch and would be paired excellently with fresh salsa.  Overall, I would say I would like them as a dip-chip, but definitely not as a “rip the entire bag open and gorge your face in them” chip.  One excellent point however, is that these chips contain no trans fat, no cholesterol, no GMO ingredients, no artificial colors and no artificial flavors.  Oddly enough, to obtain their red appearance, beet powder is used for coloring (but no worries… I couldn’t taste even a hint of beet).   Grade: mediocre

Boulder Canyon- Jalapeño Cheddar Chips

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

These are outstanding!

The flavors are balanced- there’s ample cheddar, jalapeños and potato tastes. These chips have the right amount of crunch (I guess that means there’s a good grease factor.)

If there is a down-side, it is that the bags are too small! I know it says that there are about 5 servings per bag; but I’m sure they have counted wrong.  There can’t possibly be more than two servings in these bags!

The bottom line is: if you are the mood for an exceptional snack chip with a bit of heat (from the jalapeños) these are winners!

Archer Farms- Jalapeño Cheddar Chips

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

I am sad to say that these chips are a disappointment.  It seems we tried some earlier and they were good; but, this bag misses the mark. There is very little heat in the chips, a distinct over abundance of onion flavor and an all but total absence of cheddar flavor.

On the upside, these chips have plenty of grease and crispiness.  So from a ‘chew’ perspective, they meet the need.

The bottom line is these can be avoided unless you really feel the need for some “crunch”.
