FoodShouldTasteGood – Jalapeño

Friday, October 17th, 2008

This particular chip is a tortilla chip made with diced jalapeño peppers and crushed red peppers.  The initial taste is much like one would expect from a standard tortilla chip.  What sets this brand apart from the others is slight the amount of heat that comes with the aftertaste.  I could taste definitely taste the stone ground white corn and sea salt but only a touch of jalapeño.  They have a very nice crunch and would be paired excellently with fresh salsa.  Overall, I would say I would like them as a dip-chip, but definitely not as a “rip the entire bag open and gorge your face in them” chip.  One excellent point however, is that these chips contain no trans fat, no cholesterol, no GMO ingredients, no artificial colors and no artificial flavors.  Oddly enough, to obtain their red appearance, beet powder is used for coloring (but no worries… I couldn’t taste even a hint of beet).   Grade: mediocre

McCormick- Chipotle Chile Pepper

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

McCormick’s Chipotle Chile Pepper is one of my favorite spices.  This outstanding “shake” comes from McCormick’s Gourmet Collection. The flavors are truly smokey with a middling amount of heat – dump on copious amounts for a nice glow!

I find the spice truly compliments dishes with cheese, sweet potatoes, sausage and beans. It is exceptionally nice when added to my wife’s 7 layer “Mexican” bean dip.

The only downside this spice has is in its packaging… there’s no shaker lid under the cap.  So… be careful when applying the spice as a shake to your food or you may get more heat than you bargained for!

Boulder Canyon- Jalapeño Cheddar Chips

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

These are outstanding!

The flavors are balanced- there’s ample cheddar, jalapeños and potato tastes. These chips have the right amount of crunch (I guess that means there’s a good grease factor.)

If there is a down-side, it is that the bags are too small! I know it says that there are about 5 servings per bag; but I’m sure they have counted wrong.  There can’t possibly be more than two servings in these bags!

The bottom line is: if you are the mood for an exceptional snack chip with a bit of heat (from the jalapeños) these are winners!

Archer Farms- Jalapeño Cheddar Chips

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

I am sad to say that these chips are a disappointment.  It seems we tried some earlier and they were good; but, this bag misses the mark. There is very little heat in the chips, a distinct over abundance of onion flavor and an all but total absence of cheddar flavor.

On the upside, these chips have plenty of grease and crispiness.  So from a ‘chew’ perspective, they meet the need.

The bottom line is these can be avoided unless you really feel the need for some “crunch”.
